New York CNN —California-based Farmers Insurance said Monday it is laying off 11% of its workforce — or 2,400 employees — in a bid to restructure itself for long-term growth. The jobs being cut are from across all areas of the company, according to a statement on its website. Last month, Farmers announced it would stop offering its policies in Florida, saying in a statement that the decision was necessary to manage its risk exposure in the hurricane-prone state. Farmers has also limited new homeowners insurance policies in California because of high costs and wildfire risks. The layoffs come after T-Mobile and CVS also announced thousands of job cuts this month, though the US labor market remains strong overall.

That's the thrust of why more CEOs are calling workers back to the office several days a week. So clocking badge swipes at the office seems likely to jeopardize the very thing that helped a record share of workers report being satisfied. According to participants, 82% of employees would be interested in a 10-hour, four-day workweek, and nearly half (47%) see it as highly appealing. "Having a four-day workweek, even if you're working longer days during those four days, enables you to have the flexibility of three days off without work. Agarwal wrote, "as productivity tools with artificial intelligence catch on and more high-ranking executives acknowledge the importance of rest, the four-day workweek could become more commonplace." Besides four-day workweeks, employees also showed when it comes to perks at work, millennials are more likely to care about perks than other generations.

Insurance company Farmers Group announced changes to the company's remote work policy last month, WSJ reports. Workers at insurance giant Farmers Group are reportedly threatening to quit or unionize after the company's new CEO backtracked on its remote work policy. "I sold my house and moved closer to my grandkids," another worker's comment read, according the Journal. Farmers Group spokesperson Carly Kraft told Insider over email that the company will shift to this hybrid work policy in September. The hybrid policy change will impact roughly 60% of the company's employees, Kraft wrote.

Rome/London CNN —Italy’s government convened crisis talks Thursday to investigate the reasons behind a surge in prices for pasta, one of the country’s most beloved and culturally important foods. Pasta inflation moderated a bit in April but prices were still up 16.5% over 12 months. Pasta prices have soared despite the price of wheat — the main ingredient — falling in recent months. The price of durum wheat — a type of wheat popular among Italian pasta-makers — has fallen 30% since May 2022. Making pasta only requires mixing water with the wheat, the group said, giving “little justification” for the huge increase in retail prices.
